Fairy Meadows
— at a glance

Fairy Meadows is a high alpine meadow at about 3,300 metres in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, sitting directly beneath the Raikot face of Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth-highest mountain at 8,126 metres and the so-called Killer Mountain. Reaching it is part of the experience: a drive to the Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, then a knuckle-whitening jeep ride up one of the world's most dangerous mountain tracks to Tato village, then a 2 to 3 hour walk up through pine forest to the meadow. From Fairy Meadows you can trek on to Beyal Camp and the Nanga Parbat Base Camp, a manageable day hike with one of the great mountain views on earth as the reward. Accommodation is wooden cabins and tents, with no road and no luxury, which is the point. The season runs roughly May to October, with the shoulder months of late spring and autumn the quietest. Give it at least two nights.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fairy Meadows famous for?
Fairy Meadows is a 3,300-metre alpine meadow with a direct, head-on view of Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth-highest peak. It is the base for the easy and spectacular Nanga Parbat Base Camp day trek, reached by a famous jeep road and a forest hike.
How do you get to Fairy Meadows?
Drive to the Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway (about 80 km from Gilgit), take a 4x4 jeep up a notoriously narrow cliff road to Tato village (roughly 2 hours), then walk 2 to 3 hours up through pine forest to the meadow. There is no road to Fairy Meadows itself.
How much does the Fairy Meadows jeep cost?
The Raikot Bridge to Tato jeep is a fixed round-trip fare of roughly PKR 16,000 to 22,000 for the whole vehicle, which seats 5 to 6 people, so it is far cheaper split among a group. Rates move with fuel, so confirm on arrival and carry cash.
Is the Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek difficult?
It is one of the easier base-camp treks in Pakistan. From Fairy Meadows it is a 3 to 4 hour walk to Beyal Camp and on toward the viewpoint, mostly gentle gradient at altitude. Reasonable fitness and good shoes are enough; you do not need technical skills.
What is the best time to visit Fairy Meadows?
May to October. Late spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the quietest with the clearest air, while June to August is peak domestic-tourism season and crowded. Winter access is very difficult with deep snow.
