Lahore
— at a glance

Lahore is Pakistan's cultural heart, a Mughal capital of forts, gardens and mosques wrapped around a living Walled City. Inside the old gates the Lahore Fort spreads over a vast terraced compound, its Sheesh Mahal glittering with thousands of mirror fragments, while the Wazir Khan Mosque a short walk away wears some of the finest tile work in South Asia. Across the road the Badshahi Mosque and the floodlit Fort Road food street draw crowds every evening. The city is also Pakistan's food capital, from the breakfast halwa puri of the old bazaars to the nihari, chargha and seekh kebabs of Gawalmandi. The Orange Line metro now threads through the centre, and the best months are the mild October to March window when days sit around 15 to 25°C.

Frequently asked questions

What is Lahore famous for?
Lahore is famous for its Mughal heritage and food. The highlights are the Lahore Fort with its mirrored Sheesh Mahal, the Wazir Khan and Badshahi mosques, the Shalimar Gardens, the Walled City with its old gates, and food streets serving nihari, chargha and halwa puri.
How many days do you need in Lahore?
Two to three days is enough for the main sights. Day one for the Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque and Fort Road food street, day two for the Walled City walk to Wazir Khan Mosque and Delhi Gate, and a third day for the Shalimar Gardens and museums.
What is the best time to visit Lahore?
October to March, when days are mild at about 15 to 25°C and the light suits the Walled City and forts. Summer from May to August is very hot, often above 40°C, and the July to September monsoon brings humidity and rain.
How do you get around Lahore?
The Orange Line metro runs across the city and stops near the Walled City at Lakshmi Chowk, from where a short rickshaw ride reaches the gates. Ride-hailing apps like Careem and inDrive, plus metered rickshaws, cover everywhere else cheaply.
Is Lahore safe for tourists?
Yes. Lahore is one of Pakistan's most visited cities and the tourist areas, the forts, mosques, gardens and food streets, are busy and well policed. Use normal city caution, dress modestly at mosques, and agree rickshaw fares before riding.
