Swat Valley, often called the Switzerland of Pakistan, is a green sweep of pine forest, alpine lakes and snow peaks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, now barely five to six hours from Islamabad on the Swat Motorway. The valley climbs from the bustling town of Mingora to Kalam at around 2,000 metres, the base for the emerald Mahodand Lake, reached by jeep up the Ushu Valley in summer. On the ridge above Mingora sits Malam Jabba, Pakistan's main commercial ski resort, with a chairlift and a zipline. Swat is also a cradle of ancient Buddhist Gandhara, with stupas and a fine museum in Saidu Sharif. Come from June to September for the lakes and forests, or December to February for snow and skiing.
