Skardu is the jewel of Gilgit-Baltistan, the gateway to Deosai, Shigar, Khaplu and some of the highest mountains on earth, and the first question every traveller asks is the same one: how much does a Skardu trip actually cost? This guide gives you the real numbers in Pakistani rupees for 2026, whether you fly or drive, travel on a shoestring or in comfort, and go independently or on a package. Every figure here comes from current operator rates and traveller cost reports, so you can budget with confidence rather than guesswork. The short version: a careful budget traveller can do a five day Skardu trip for around 30,000 to 50,000 rupees per person excluding flights, a comfortable mid range trip runs roughly 100,000 to 200,000 rupees, and a luxury trip with the best resorts and a private vehicle climbs to 400,000 rupees and beyond. The single biggest variable is whether you fly or take the long road, so we start there. ## By air or by road: the big decision This choice shapes your whole budget and your time. **By air.** The Islamabad to Skardu flight is the great time saver, putting you in the heart of the mountains in under an hour instead of a 15 to 20 hour drive. Fares are the catch. A one way seat typically runs from around 25,850 rupees on the cheaper end up to 45,000 to 70,000 rupees in peak season, and a return commonly lands around 55,000 rupees when booked early. Flights from Lahore and Karachi route through Islamabad and cost more, roughly 45,000 to 80,000 rupees one way from Lahore and up to 90,000 from Karachi. The flights are famously weather dependent, so cancellations are common and you should always keep a road plan as backup. **By road.** The drive up the Karakoram Highway is long but spectacular, and far cheaper. A one way seat on a comfortable intercity bus runs about 7,000 to 10,000 rupees per person, while a private car for the return journey costs roughly 50,000 to 100,000 rupees depending on the vehicle. The trade off is two long travel days each way, which eat into a short trip. For most people the sweet spot is to fly one way if the budget allows and drive the other, or to drive both ways on a longer, slower trip where the journey is part of the adventure. ## Daily budget tiers Here is what a five day Skardu trip costs per person, excluding the international or domestic flight, across the common comfort levels: - **Budget / backpacker:** 30,000 to 50,000 rupees. Guesthouses, shared transport, local food. - **Standard:** 70,000 to 120,000 rupees. Decent hotels, a mix of private and shared transport, restaurant meals. - **Mid range:** 100,000 to 200,000 rupees. Good hotels, a private vehicle, the main jeep excursions included. - **Luxury:** 150,000 to 400,000 rupees and up. Top resorts, a private Land Cruiser, flights and guided days throughout. Stretch the trip longer and your daily average usually drops, because the expensive part is the long transport in and out, not the days spent in the valley. ## Cost breakdown by category ### Flights and road transport - **Islamabad to Skardu flight:** from about 25,850 rupees one way, 55,000 rupees return when booked early, rising to 45,000 to 70,000 in peak season. - **Lahore to Skardu:** roughly 45,000 to 80,000 rupees one way. - **Karachi to Skardu:** roughly 45,000 to 90,000 rupees one way. - **Intercity bus (by road):** 7,000 to 10,000 rupees per person each way. - **Private car, return road trip:** 50,000 to 100,000 rupees depending on vehicle. ### Hotels per night - **Budget guest houses:** 3,000 to 15,000 rupees. - **Standard tourist hotels:** 10,000 to 18,000 rupees. - **Mid range hotels:** 20,000 to 30,000 rupees. - **Luxury resorts (Shangrila, Shigar Fort, Khaplu Palace and similar):** 30,000 to 170,000 rupees. Rates climb sharply in the summer peak and during cherry blossom season, and the best resorts sell out, so book well ahead for those windows. ### Food - **A single meal per person:** 1,000 to 1,500 rupees. - **A standard meal for two:** 3,000 to 6,000 rupees. - **Premium dining at a resort:** 8,000 to 20,000 rupees. Local restaurants and dhabas in Skardu town are inexpensive and good, while the resort restaurants are where the premium prices live. Apricots, walnuts and local trout are regional treats worth trying. ### Jeeps, 4x4 and fuel The high country around Skardu needs a four wheel drive, and the jeep legs are a major line item. - **Prado or 4x4, per day:** 10,000 to 15,000 rupees. - **Land Cruiser, per day:** 12,000 to 18,000 rupees. - **Sedan, per day:** 8,000 to 12,000 rupees. - **Taxi, per day:** 1,500 to 2,500 rupees. - **Motorbike rental, per day:** 1,000 to 2,000 rupees. - **Fuel for a 4x4, per day:** 12,000 to 20,000 rupees; for a car, 7,000 to 12,000 rupees. The Deosai National Park run, the Shigar and Khaplu valleys and the Basho meadows all need a jeep, so budget for at least a couple of full jeep days and share the vehicle to split the cost. ## Tour package prices If you would rather have everything arranged, a package from a Pakistani operator bundles transport, hotels, the jeep legs, a guide and some meals into one price. These are current 2026 rates. **By air packages from Islamabad:** - **4 days / 3 nights:** around 102,000 to 105,000 rupees per person. - **5 days / 4 nights:** around 110,000 to 115,000 rupees. - **6 days / 5 nights:** around 145,000 to 155,000 rupees. - **7 days / 6 nights:** around 180,000 to 190,000 rupees. - **Luxury resort air packages (Shangrila, Khoj, Dynasty, Chunda):** roughly 295,000 to 440,000 rupees for a 4 day stay. **By road packages from Islamabad:** - **Budget shared departures:** about 28,500 to 32,500 rupees for 6 days, 31,500 to 39,000 for 7 days, and 40,000 to 45,500 for 8 days. - **Standard private road tours:** Katpana Desert 5 days around 200,000 rupees, Shigar Valley 6 days around 240,000, Cherry Blossom 7 days around 275,000. - **Longer and family tours:** a 10 day Skardu family tour around 400,000 rupees. **What the 8 day Skardu tour package covers.** The popular 8 day option, whether the budget shared version from around 40,000 rupees or a deluxe multi valley version, typically gives you enough time for Skardu town, Shigar, Khaplu, the Kachura lakes and a full Deosai day, with transport, hotels, a guide and breakfast included. The price gap between the budget and deluxe versions is almost entirely about the hotel tier and whether you fly or drive. A standalone 7 day road package is often quoted in tiers: roughly 87,500 rupees budget, 111,000 standard and 184,000 luxury, while the 6 day by air equivalent runs about 72,500 budget, 98,500 standard and 178,000 luxury, with the air ticket sometimes separate. ## Cost from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi - **From Islamabad** is cheapest and easiest, since both the flight and the road trip start here. - **From Lahore** add the Lahore to Islamabad leg, or fly via Islamabad. Road packages from Lahore are longer and a little pricier. - **From Karachi** the flight is the practical option given the distance, so the airfare to Skardu via Islamabad is the dominant cost. Wherever you start, the trick is to get to Islamabad cheaply and begin the Skardu leg from there. ## The cheapest month and season Skardu is a summer destination. The peak runs June to August, when both flights and hotels are at their most expensive and the best rooms sell out. The shoulder months of May, September and October offer lower prices, thinner crowds and still excellent weather, and they are the value sweet spot. The cherry blossom window in early spring is beautiful but commands premium tour rates. Winter is the cheapest of all and stunning under snow, but the cold is severe, Deosai closes, and flights are even more cancellation prone, so it suits only well prepared travellers. ## Three worked example budgets **The road backpacker.** Five to six days, one person, travelling up by bus, staying in guest houses, eating local and sharing jeeps: roughly 35,000 to 55,000 rupees all in, the cheapest way to see Skardu. **The comfortable flyer.** Six days, two people, flying one way and driving the other, mid range hotels, a private jeep for Deosai and Shigar: reckon on 250,000 to 350,000 rupees for the pair including one set of flights. **The luxury escape.** Four to five days, two people, flying both ways, a top resort like Shangrila or Shigar Fort, a private Land Cruiser and guided days: 500,000 rupees and up for the couple. ## How to keep the cost down - **Drive at least one way.** The bus is a fraction of the flight cost and the Karakoram Highway is an experience in itself. - **Travel in the shoulder season.** May, September and October cut both flight and hotel prices sharply. - **Share the jeep.** The Deosai, Shigar and Khaplu runs cost the same whether one person or six, so fill the vehicle. - **Book a group road package.** Shared departures from around 28,500 to 45,500 rupees bundle everything for a fraction of a private trip. - **Eat in town.** Skardu town restaurants are cheap and good; save the resort dining for a treat. - **Book flights early.** The gap between the early 25,850 rupee fare and a peak 70,000 rupee seat is enormous. ## Entry fees, permits and other extras A few smaller costs add up and are easy to forget when you build a budget. The Deosai National Park has a modest entry fee per person and per vehicle, collected at the gate. Some lakes and forts, including Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace, charge entry or are run as heritage hotels with a visitor tariff. Boat rides on the Kachura lakes cost a small fee per person. A local SIM or a data package is cheap and worth buying in Skardu town, since coverage thins out in the high country. Tips for drivers and guides, bottled water, snacks and the inevitable souvenir apricots and gemstones are minor individually but add a few thousand rupees over a trip. Finally, foreign visitors should check any current permit requirements for the border and high mountain zones before travelling, since rules can change. Build a buffer of five to ten percent into whatever budget you settle on, because mountain travel always throws up an extra jeep hire, a weather delay or a change of plan, and a little slack keeps the trip stress free. ## Related guides Plan the wider trip with our [Pakistan trip cost](/blog/pakistan-trip-cost) breakdown, get the timing right with [best time to visit Pakistan](/blog/best-time-to-visit-pakistan), see what to actually do in our [things to do in Skardu](/blog/things-to-do-in-skardu) guide and the full [Skardu travel guide](/blog/skardu-travel-guide), and compare regions in [Hunza vs Skardu](/blog/hunza-vs-skardu).
